Ultrasonic (US)

  • US systems detect the ultrasonic sound generated by escaping gas
  • Leaks to atmosphere from lines pressured as low as 350 kPa can be detected
  • All types of gas leaks can be detected – CHx, and non CHx including inerts

  • Leaks can be identified some distance from source

Flame Ionization Detection (FID)

  • FID systems measure VOC concentration in air
    • CHx in air as methane equivalent in ppmv in the immediate vicinity of the probe tip
    • FID monitoring targets component elements likely to leak
  • Remedial action is required if leak rate exceeds a set concentration threshold
  • FID data are the basis of most regulatory LDAR programs
  • Used to check effectiveness of repair actions
